In the state of Iowa, an ignition interlock is required for a minimum of 12 months for all repeat offenders. First-time offenders can install an ignition interlock in order to regain driving privileges versus serving a 6 month revocation.

WHAT IS AN IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE?

An ignition interlock device integrates breath alcohol testing with your vehicle's ignition system. Prior to starting your vehicle, you will need to submit a breath sample into the hand held portion of the device that tests for the presence of alcohol. If your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) is below Iowa’s ignition interlock limit (.025), your vehicle will start. If alcohol is detected, your vehicle will not start until a passing sample has been provided.
